An Escape-Worthy Itinerary: Wonders Never Cease in Roscoe, NY
Day One: Watch Sunset From a Wood-Fired Hot Tub, Then Enjoy Dinner by the Wood-Burning Stove
• 4 pm: Check-in at Wonders Never Cease. On your way into town, stop in Livingston Manor to stock up on booze at Upstream Wine & Spirits, grab some specialty meats at Van Smokey, then hit Main Street Farm or Peck’s Market for the rest.
When you get to the house, make the first move in heating up the wood-fired hot tub; it takes ~2 hours to warm to proper temperature. (Instructions are provided at the house to ensure this is a problem-free process!)
• 6 pm: Pour a glass of wine or a cocktail, then take in sunset from the wood-fired hot tub.
• 7:30 pm: Prepare a homemade meal in the kitchen (or on the outdoor grill, weather permitting). Groups up to eight can fit at the large dining table; couples might opt for a cozier meal by the fireplace.
Day Two: Morning Sauna Session, Visit An Alpaca Farm, Hike to a Mountaintop Pond and Waterfall, Dinner in Town
• 8 am: Wake up and begin the heating process for the sauna, which takes ~45 minutes to warm to temperature. Have breakfast while you wait.
• 10:30 am: Sign up for a $10 visit to nearby Buck Brook Alpacas, which we guarantee will be one of the most heart-warming $10 you’ll ever spend. Groups welcome (book your own private tour), kids under 3 are free. Book online to secure a spot.
• 12 pm: Head to Northern Farmhouse Pasta for lunch, whose menu includes seafood, pasta, ramen and more. Housed in a small, unassuming farmhouse on the side of a road, owner “Pasta Bob” (as locals call him) serves up some of the very best fare in the region. You can buy Northern Farmhouse’s dry pastas to-go, too.
• 1:30 pm: Walk off lunch on Roscoe’s Main Street, stopping into Taylor & Ace, The Wemoc General, and The Hound Books for local treasures.
• 3 pm: Take a hike at Russel Brook Falls and Mud Pond. This 2.5 mile route hikes out and back to the mountaintop Mud Pond, with a stop at the majestic Russel Brook Falls. For those up for more of a challenge, take the 4.4 mile loop version of the hike. Friendly reminder: if you take this or any hike in the Catskills, #leavenotrace, and always come prepared.
• 7 pm: Dinner at The Junction is an absolute must while visiting Roscoe. This laid-back cocktail bar and restaurant serves elevated comfort food with a southern influence.
Favorite menu items include the whipped feta, smoked trout spread, and the grain bowl. The chicken sandwich regularly wins awards, as well. For drinks, the cocktails are great, or ask for a local Catskill Brewery beer: Ball Lightning is at the top of our all-time faves list. The Junction is walk-in only, so grab a drink at the bar while you wait.
Day Three: Brunch, Shopping, Brews, and a Hike Up Beer Mountain
• 11 am: Check-out at Wonders Never Cease. On departure, head straight into Livingston Manor for brunch at The Walk-In, whose biscuits are as rich as they are divine.
• 12 pm: Walk Livingston Manor’s Main Street, with some great shops and the world-class Catskill Art Space – complete with a Sol LeWitt room, plus an immersive James Turrell experience. Some favorite shops in town include Corners, Homestedt, Spruce Home Goods, Jitterbug, One Grand Books, Concrete & Water, and Old Souls.
• 3 pm: Hike Livingston Manor’s “Beer Mountain” at Upward Brewery. The short hike takes about 45 minutes round-trip, whose views from the top overlook Livingston Manor. Post-hike, grab a beer and sit by the fire. Also worthy of mention: the brewery has a full menu, so you can grab a bite before heading back to the city.
