Why We Love It:
Less than two hours from NYC, Dawson Farmhouse is a secluded Catskill Mountain retreat, tucked away on a wooded 13-acre property. This charming vacation rental sleeps six people, and has spacious gathering areas inside and outside – including an indoor fireplace and an outdoor bonfire area – making it the perfect spot for an autumn leaf-peeping weekend getaway.
The Vibe:
This farmhouse is perfect for cozy weekends away, with a large firepit, an outdoor dining area, and a grand stone fireplace in the central living room. Below, we’re outlining a weekend in Kerhonkson and the surrounding area, perfectly paired with a stay at Dawson Farmhouse.
An Escape-Worthy Itinerary: Dawson Farmhouse in Kerhonkson, NY
Day One: Provision Shopping, Check-In & Relax
• 4 pm: Check-in at Dawson Farmhouse. On your way Upstate, stop in the town of New Paltz for a quick bite at Main Course Marketplace, or grab a coffee and some handmade vegan chocolates at Lagusta’s Luscious. To stock up on locally sourced groceries, beverages (boozy or not), and provisions, make your next stop Accord Market.
• 5 pm: After settling in, pop open a drink (our favorite pick at Accord Market is Catskill Brewery’s Nightshine Black Lager, a smooth beer with notes of coffee, chocolate, and nuts) and get a bonfire going. Take some time to relax and warm up by the fire, admiring the surrounding views of the Catskills as summer turns to fall.
• 7 pm: Prep dinner in the chef’s kitchen or the grill. Once dinner is ready, take your pick of one of three dining locations: inside the house, its screened-in porch, or on the deck.
• 9 pm: After dinner, spend the rest of the evening playing cards around the dining table inside, or head back out to the bonfire. Enjoy a drink under the stars; for kiddos or the young at heart, a s’mores kit is provided!
Day Two: Hiking, An Orchard Visit, Farm Brewery & Throwback Rollerskating
• 10 am: After a morning at the house, head over to Ravenwood, where food and agriculture meet art and design. This barn has been reimagined into a farm stand/cafe/shop for the home with art, kitchenware, produce and more. Home to some of the best breakfast tarts in New York (seriously, and there’s always a sweet and savory option), Ravenwood is the perfect place to kick off a local adventure. Before leaving, grab some fresh, local produce for later.
• 11 am: Head over to the Ashokan Promenade for stunning views of the Catskill Mountains. This “trail” (it is a paved road) skims the side of the Ashokan Reservoir – one of the largest bodies of water in the Catskills – with towering mountains beyond.
Alternately, those looking for more of a hike should opt for the Ashokan Quarry Trail, a short two-mile trail with stunning views of Burroughs Range, North Dome and Tremper Mountain.
• 1:30 pm: Lunch and cider at Westwind Orchard. This farm-to-table Italian-inspired menu features fresh salads, personal pizzas, and hearty pasta dishes. After eating lunch, stop into the cidery for a farm tour and tasting.
• 3 pm: Take the five-minute walk (or two-minute drive) from Westwind to Arrowood Farms. Pop into the taproom for a flight of some of the Hudson Valley’s best beer, or enjoy a cocktail made from spirits distilled on-site.
• 6 pm: Indulge in some nostalgic fun at Skate Time, a neon-adorned roller rink and shrine to the 80’s and 90’s. The enormous roller rink is reminiscent of birthday parties past, and is the perfect place for fast-paced fun. Skate time has a seemingly endless supply of popcorn for snacking (can you expect anything less from a roller rink opened by the folks at Bjorn Quorn?) – but also serves up comforting classics like pierogis, chicken and waffle fries, hot dogs, and nachos. There’s also a selection of red, white, and rose wine, craft beers, and non-alcoholic drinks to enjoy while you play games in the token-operated arcade.
• 9 pm: Back at Dawson Farmhouse, settle into the living room around the fireplace. Dig into leftover provisions from Accord Market, and serve up some produce from Ravenwood, for the perfect late-night charcuterie board.
Day Three: Departure Brunch & Storm King Art Center
• 11 am: Enjoy a slow morning at Dawson Farmhouse until check-out. From there, head to the cafe at Mill & Main for Sunday brunch. The ever-changing rotating menu is always a hit, bringing staples like breakfast wraps, muffins, bagels, and sandwiches to brunch lovers throughout the Hudson Valley. After brunch, grab a latte to-go and look around the cafe for provisions and baked goods to enjoy on the way home.
• 1 pm: Begin the journey toward NYC, making a stop at Storm King Art Center. This iconic outdoor sculpture garden is located halfway between Kerhonkson and New York City, with 500 acres of large-scale sculptures and site-specific commissions. When you’re done exploring the grounds and admiring the artwork, it’s a straight shot down the thruway back to the city.
