Hello June!

It’s not technically summer yet, but this week’s forecast feels like the final flip of the switch. After a gray, chilly spring (who thought we’d still be turning the heat back on in May?), we’re soaking up every bit of sunshine and finally looking ahead to the season.

The Hudson Valley and Catskills are greening up fast — just in time for hikes through Minnewaska State Park and the Mohonk Preserve, swims at North-South Lake, and long treks into the Slide Mountain Wilderness.

This month, we’re sharing a handful of standout stays built for summer living — from a lakeside estate with kayaks and a hidden waterfall, to a restored Victorian with a stone hot tub and fire pit, to a riverside mid-century motel that’s made for late nights and long mornings.

As always, exclusive discounts and booking codes are below the paywall for our paid members. Subscriptions are $6/month or $60/year, and they help keep our small, women-owned and operated business going. Plus, as always, 1% goes back to the planet. 🌍

Here’s to the start of something warmer; after the rain and cold the Catskills have had for the past week, summer weather is well-deserved.

See you out there!

Glasco BLCK Creek in Highland, NY

Spend the summer enjoying the private, 37-acre lake at Glasco BLCK Creek — complete with kayaks, canoes, waterside lounge chairs, and swimming docks. Photos: Thomas John Agoglia

Tucked into the hills of Highland, NY, Glasco BLCK Creek is a 164-acre retreat defined by privacy, quiet, and room to roam. At the heart of the estate is a 37-acre swimmable lake, bordered by pines and dotted with docks. Four architecturally distinct homes and cottages are spread across the property, each offering easy access to water and woods. Summer days revolve around lake swims, kayaking, and canoeing, followed by rinses in the outdoor shower or soaks in the hot tub beneath the trees.

The grounds are equally inviting for wandering, with private trails leading through the forest to a quiet, on-site waterfall. Guests can spend their days hiking, lounging lakeside, or layering in extra experiences like guided yoga sessions, spa treatments, and curated wine tastings. Golden hour paddles and late-night stargazing from the hot tub set the tone for a stay at BLCK Creek – unhurried and restorative.

Off-property, the Mohonk Preserve is just twenty minutes away and offers over 70 miles of trails, including the famed Lemon Squeeze – a local favorite for those looking to scramble through narrow rock passages and catch sprawling views from the Sky Top Tower. After a day on the trail, freshen up at the estate and take the fifteen-minute drive to Darlings, where elevated comfort food is served in a moody, maximalist setting that feels just right after a day in the woods.

This month, Escape Club members receive a 10% discount on stays at Glasco BLCK Creek, plus a complimentary Upstate merchandise tote. See complete details and booking information below the paywall.

Set on the banks of Esopus Creek, The Leeway is a riverfront retreat built for summer’s long, unhurried days. Hammocks sway between trees, fire pits invite late-night gatherings, and the entire lawn feels like a lived-in park — casual but dialed in, ready for group getaways or quiet weekends with a book and the breeze. The property also features outdoor dining setups and shady corners, where barbecues stretch into evenings spent gathered under the stars.

Lawn games play out between dips in the water, while the surrounding woods give the whole place a sense of calm enclosure. It’s summer living with just the right amount of structure.

For those eager to explore the surrounding area, the Northern Catskills offer a variety of hiking opportunities. The Mt. Tremper Trail is a rewarding six-mile climb with panoramic views from its fire tower, while the Tanbark Loop offers a shorter, gentler option through wooded hills above Phoenicia. For a more demanding trek, the Wittenberg and Cornell Mountains Trail spans nearly nine miles and features rugged ascents and sweeping vistas. After spending the day outside, head to Woodstock Brewing to indulge in a flight of craft beer paired with street tacos.
