An Escape-Worthy Itinerary: Sowilo Retreat in Cambridge, NY
Day One: Check-In & Check Out
• 4:00 pm: Check-in at Sowilo Retreat. On your way Upstate, plan to stop in the city of Troy for a bite at Little Pecks. Walk down to Troy Wine Co. to pick up a few bottles of small-production, naturally-made wine for your stay, and grab a coffee at Alias Coffee before hopping back on the road.
Once in Cambridge, stop at the Cambridge Food Co-op to pick up provisions and N/A drinks for your weekend. (If you’re staying in a tiny house, these come with full kitchens.)
• 5:00 pm: After settling into your room, pour yourself a glass of wine to unwind from the drive. Bundle up, head outside, and start a bonfire for a cozy fireside happy hour.
• 6:30 pm: Head to the main lodge to enjoy a Mediterranean-inspired dinner. Each meal made in the scratch kitchen at Sowilo includes a variety of fresh, in-season ingredients that come together to make gourmet, high-quality dishes. Select your meal from the prefixed menu, which features vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. The food is prepped by the owners, and genuinely incredible.
• 9:00 pm: Head back to your tiny house or Geodesic domes for an unplugged evening. Restart your fire and spend some time stargazing outside, or head inside for an after-dinner cocktail.
Day Two: Sound Baths, Skiing, and Craft Beer
• 9:00 am: Sleep in, and then head to the lodge for breakfast. Fuel up on sweet or savory options like berry bowls, avocado toast, crepe omelets, and yogurt bowls. After eating, move to the lounge area and sip your coffee in front of the fireplace. While here, think ahead to tomorrow and request a Sunday morning yoga Vinyasa class.
• 10:30 am: After eating, head downstairs in the lodge for a guided sound bath. One of the many wellness-centered activities at Sowilo, sound baths are a form of meditative sound healing: an ancient therapy that triggers the relaxation response to counter symptoms of chronic stress. Lay back, relax, and let the overlapping sound waves leave you feeling calm and refreshed. (Please request activity schedule upon booking.)
• 12:30 pm: After a relaxing morning, hit the road and head to Bromley, a family-friendly ski resort in Peru, Vermont. With 47 trails, its longest is 2.5 miles and is beginner-friendly. For those more seasoned, an entire face of the mountain is dedicated to advanced trails.
Not traveling during ski season? Check out Merck Forest, a working farm with beautiful hiking trails and farm animal encounters. It’s one of our favorite spots in the world; also great for snow-shoeing! It’s free to visit, so before leaving, hit the shop to support the farm by buying some Vermont maple syrup or other great gifts.
• 5:00 pm: After spending the afternoon in Vermont, head back into New York to return to Sowilo. On your way, make a stop at Argyle Brewery’s Beer Garden and Taproom in Greenwich for a post-ski drink. Pick from Argyle’s selection of rotating staple and seasonal beers – our favorite is the Oat Me Stout, a silky, full-bodied oatmeal stout.
• 7:00 pm: Once back at Sowilo, freshen up and head to the lodge for dinner. After an action-packed day, head to bed early.
Day Three: Morning Activities and an Afternoon in Albany
• 8:00 am: Wake up early to enjoy coffee in bed. Slip into something comfortable and head to the lodge for a morning Vinyasa yoga class.
• 9:30 am: Refreshed and revitalized, head to the lodge for your final meal at Sowilo Retreat. After indulging in one last Sowilo meal, walk through the grounds one last time before packing up and departing. Check out, and on your way out of town, stop into Canteen Coffee Co. for a latte to-go before hitting the road.
• 11:00 am: On your way downstate, stop into the city of Kingston for a meal and to stretch your legs. Depending on how early you leave Sowilo, you may be able to grab a stuffed bagel at the new Moonrise Bagels, or stop into Camp Kingston for sandwiches, soups, and salads. After eating, take a walk through Uptown and stop at vintage shops, record stores, and boutiques before getting back onto the thruway and heading home.
