Happy New Year!

It’s been a restorative two weeks here at Escape Brooklyn. I was lucky enough to take the stay home and unwind approach to the holidays this year – and let me tell you, there’s a certain luxury in being able to spend them Upstate. There was lots of baking, some knitting, hockey-related television (iykyk), and just enough snow at just the right moments to make the post-holiday blues a little more manageable.

The start of the year also happens to be one of the quietest times in real estate, but that hasn’t stopped me from scrolling Zillow more than I’d like to admit. Even in the slow season, a few real gems surfaced.

As I mentioned in our first “From the Group Chat” newsletter, I’m especially drawn to homes with character. So for this New Year, we’re leaning into the old stuff: a farmhouse nearly as old as the United States, an 1850s cottage on the coast of Maine, an understated Victorian in the Berkshires, an early 1900s arts and crafts cottage in Onteora Park, and a bold contemporary at the base of the Northern Catskills.

If the year ahead is all about new beginnings, consider this a reminder that old houses — the ones with stories, quirks, and charm — deserve some love too.

Here’s to old houses for the New Year.
